Ortiz was clobbered twice by Mayweather after dropping his hands to apologize for headbutting him.

In an interview at TMZ.com, Ortiz said “They always tell you, a referee has the upper hand. So in this case, I respect the referees at all times. The referee called his time, or whatever, and then he’s looking that way, so I made sure it was OK with the ref, and then the moment I look at the ref, I look back at Floyd, and then I get caught. I get hit. Personally I don’t think that was justice, justified. That was, like, totally unfair, but it’s OK. I’ll get him back. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. I want the rematch, but I doubt our friend wants it.”

This is what I thought happened. Since referee Joe Cortez had taken his eyes of the two boxers and had turned his body to face the ringside timekeeper, it left Ortiz unsure of whether the action his truly been restarted. This is the reason why Ortiz chose to look at Cortez after Ortiz was hit with Mayweather’s first shot, a left hook. Unfortunately, Cortez was still not looking at the action even after Ortiz was clobbered with a left hook. Given that Cortez says that he had told the fighters “Let’s go,” he should have been looking at the action instead of at the timekeeper for such a long time.

Ortiz wants the rematch with Mayweather but the chances are probably remote of that happening. Mayweather will likely want to fight Amir Khan next or another top contender. There’s a lot of money in a fight against Khan.
