Ortiz says that he did this in response to being hit by an elbow from Mayweather. Ortiz stated that he told referee Joe Cortez about it twice, but he failed to anything.

Here is what Ortiz said in an interview at TMZ.com: “I did the headbutt only because I told Cortez twice that he [Mayweather] used the elbow on my eyebrow, my right eyebrow. I said ‘Cortez, elbow, elbow!’ And he said ‘Fight out of it.’ And Mayweather was smiling at me and I said [to himself] alright, boom! After that, I just apologized and I got a point deducted and nothing happened. It would have been something else if I had gashed his eye open. It would have been a bad thing. And I payed for what I I had done. I was deducted a point for it. I was apologetic to him, I really meant it sincerely. If he’s really worthy as a champion, and really as great as he says he is, he doesn’t have to be a champion like that. Dude, take a step back and if you’re really as great as you think you are, take a step back and we can settle it as professional athletes. I feel it was unjust on his part. I’m in the moment, and I’m saying sorry and then boom! I got clobbered. I don’t feel he’s worthy of the championship or to be carrying the name of champion unless he gives me a rematch. This isn’t the way it’s supposed to end. There’s no closure, not for me. I would really love a rematch and appreciate it.”

Ortiz would have really helped himself if he explained why he headbutted Mayweather immediately after the fight instead of waiting this long to say something about it. Now it just looks like Ortiz is trying to come up with an excuse well after the fact instead of telling it like it is. Mayweather probably won’t bother giving Ortiz a rematch because Ortiz isn’t getting too much sympathy in the media and there’s not a big push from the fans to see Mayweather fight Ortiz again. Had Ortiz fought a little better, he’d have a much better chance at getting another fight with Mayweather.
