Mitchell stops Ferreyo, Diaz decisions Smith

By Dan Ambrose: Undefeated heavyweight contender Seth Mitchell (23-0-1, 17 KO’s) kept his perfect record intact on Friday night, stopping journeyman Hector Ferreyo (21-11-2, 12 KO’s) in the third round of a scheduled 10 round bout at Texas Station Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mitchell hurt Ferreryo in the third and fired away on him until the referee halted the action at 2:17 of the round.

Ferreryo took a bad beating in the one-sided fight, leaving him badly bruised with one swollen. Although Mitchell won the fight, he doesn’t appear to be anywhere near the class of the Klitschko brothers or guys like Robert Helenius and David Price.

Mitchell is a good U.S fighter, but I have my doubts he could beat guys like Eddie Chambers and Chris Arreola. I see both guys as much better than Mitchell by far.

In other action on the card, undefeated former 2008 Olympic Gold medalist Felix Diaz (10-0, 6 KO’s) defeated Larry Smith (10-6, 7 KO’s) by an eight round unanimous decision in welterweight action.

The final scores were 80-72, 79-73 and 79-73. Diaz, only 5’5”, looked impressive in throwing fast combinations to get the better of the much slower Smith.

However, Diaz lacked the power to put him away and that’s not a good sign. Diaz seems to be too short for the welterweight division and it’s hard to imagine seeing him find success with his limited height and power.

In the amateur ranks, Diaz was a superb fighter, winning the gold medal in 2008. But in the pro ranks, his height is going to be a problem for him given that he doesn’t have much power.
