Maidana, 28, was supposed to have fought last month on August 27th against Robert Guerrero, but the fight was cancelled after Guerrero tore up his left rotator cuff sparring a week before the fight. Maidana’s Golden Boy Promotions management briefly attempted to salvage the fight date but were unable to find a suitable opponent for him to fight.

It’s highly unlikely that much will be found in the way of competition for Maidana by September 23. At best, a bottom ranked contender, but not the guy that Maidana wants to fight. Maidana wants WBA Super World light welterweight champion Amir Khan. However, Khan has no interest in tangling with Maidana again after barely escaping with a win last December in a fight where Khan took an enormous amount of punishment in the last three rounds.

Maidana will be facing the winner of the September 10th World Boxing Association light welterweight eliminator bout between Breidis Prescott and Paul McCloskey later on this year in an interesting fight. The hard hitting Prescott will likely knock McCloskey out, which set up a fight between two of the hardest punchers in the light welterweight division in Maidana vs. Prescott. For boxing fans who may have forgot, Prescott destroyed Khan in only one round three years ago in 2008. Khan never even attempted to avenge the defeat.
