Image: Fury takes an easy fight against Firtha, calls it a risky gambleBy Scott Gilfoid: I really got a laugh out of seeing British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion Tyson Fury describing his September 17th fight against journeyman fighter Nicolai Firtha (20-8-1, 8 KO’s) as a risky fight.

You know things are bad when you’ve got Fury building up a weak puncher like Firtha as a risky fight. I think I’ve totally lost the little bit of respect I still had for Fury with that comment. Fury may have missed his true calling in life. He should have been a politician or a snake oil salesman, because he sure is good at putting a good slant on the choosing of this weak opponent.

Firtha has lost four out of his last fight fights, and there’s nothing risky about this fight other than Fury risking looking like a cherry picker for choosing such a weak opponent. Fury could have faced the dangerous unbeaten Mike Perez, James Toney or Audley Harrison. Instead, he’s facing a 6’6″ heavyweight with no power, no hand speed and no defense. What a poor pick. There was a lot of talk about me fighting Martin Rogan and a few other names like Mike Perez and Leif Larsen were mentioned but I’ve accepted to fight Firtha who’s a lot younger than Rogan and has mixed in a lot higher company than any of those other guys.

Fury said this about Firtha – [He’s’ “A bit of a gamble. With two weeks to go I know this is a risk, a gamble but I’m a true fighting man and a man of honour and I’m prepared to fight any man on the planet and I want the Irish fight fans to come out and see a real fight not some knock over job. There was a lot of talk about me fighting Martin Rogan and a few other names like Mike Perez and Leif Larsen were mentioned but I’ve accepted to fight Firtha who’s a lot younger than Rogan and has mixed in a lot higher company than any of those other guys.”

What a joke this this is. Granted, the 32-year-old Firtha is younger than the 40-year-old Martin Rogan, but that was a terrible idea for Fury to even consider facing an old guy like Rogan in the first place. But the 25-year-old Mike Perez would make easy work of Firtha, so it’s hilarious that Fury is pumping Firtha up as a better choice than Perez. He’s not. Firtha is a journeyman, while Perez is a legitimate and up and coming fighter that likely would have beaten Fury. I smell fear. How sad of Fury.
