Image: Bunce sees decay in Vitali's skills, thinks Haye can beat himBy William Mackay: WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (43-2, 40 KO’s) may have destroyed his hapless challenger Tomasz Adamek (44-2, 28 KO’s) by a one-sided 10th round TKO last Saturday night, but not everyone came away from watching that fight impressed with what they saw of Vitali.

One of those people who wasn’t impressed with Vitali is writer Steve Bunch of ESPN.co.uk. Where some boxing fans saw excellent from Vitali, Bunce saw decay, a slowing of the reflexes and a real possibility that former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye can beat the giant Vitali.

Bunce said “His [Vitali] neck, shoulders and back seemed to be hurting him, and that’s understandable – he is 40 now – but i made him appear seriously slow. If Haye was thinking “I fancy it” last week, he will now be on the phone shouting “Get me him!”

Bunce goes on to describe how Vitali looked to be plodding, moving his right leg in an odd manner that made it hard for him to hit with power that gives Bunce an impression that he has a knee problem. Bunce also thinks that Vitali lacked confidence that he got finish off Adamek after hurting him several times in the fight with big right hands.

I for one didn’t see any real noticeable change in Vitali’s game from when he was fighting in 2003. I watched Vitali’s win over Danny Williams the other day, and Vitali looked just as slow in that fight as he did against Adamek. If anything, Vitali appears to be a better fighter now because he’s throwing more uppercuts now than he did back then. He obviously has lost something over the years, but not enough in my view for a guy like David Haye to beat him.

Vitali will likely face Haye next unless Haye decides he doesn’t want the fight. Haye spoke up the last Friday, saying he wants to fight Vitali next and send him into retirement. Whether Haye was serious or not or just trying to take advantage of the attention surrounding the Vitali-Adamek fight remains to be seen.
