Image: Breidis Prescott vs. Mike Alvarado on Pacquiao-Marquez undercard on 11/12By William Mackay: The Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez fight card just got a whole better with the news that light welterweight knockout artist and former Amir Khan conqueror Breidis Prescott (24-3, 19 KO’s) will be facing the equally huge punching light welterweight contender Mike Alvarado (31-0, 22 KO’s) on the undercard on November 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Dan Rafael is ESPN says that both of the promoters for Alvarado and Prescott are reporting that they’ve made a deal for this fight and are only awaiting signatures from the fighters. Prescott, ranked #6 WBA, was beaten earlier this month by a controversial 12 round unanimous decision against Paul McCloskey in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It looked to a lot of people, including myself, like it was a hometown decision.

I had Prescott easily winning fight fight by a wide margin of 11 rounds to 1. McCloskey came on in the second half of the fight, but mostly missed with his shots and ate a countless jabs to the head. The pro McCloskey Irish crowd cheered madly for every miss from McCloskey, and that may have influenced the judges when it came to scoring the fight. I had problems scoring the bout even through all the screaming from the Irish fans, because you can’t mistake a miss or a straight jab to the head. Thankfully, Prescott still remains ranked above McCloskey in the WBA rankings, because it would so sad if he were to get shoved down in the rankings based on this loss.

Alvarado, #12 IBF, is one of the hardest punchers in the light welterweight division, but he’s been slow in moving his career along. In 2011, he’s beaten Gabriel Martinez and Ray Narh. But he’s got to start moving a lot faster and getting bigger fights if he wants to get a title shot before he gets much older. At 31, it’s time Alvarado start stepping it up and this is a great fight to see what he’s got. Unlike McCloskey, Alvarado won’t be trying to keep from getting hit all night long, and I can’t see any controversy in the outcome for this fight. Either Prescott gets to Alvarado and knocks him out or Alvarado destroys Prescott. One of these guys are getting knocked out on November 12th. This could be one of the better fights on the Pacquiao vs. Marquez card.
