By Eric Thomas: Making his third defense of his WBA World welterweight title champion Vyacheslav Senchenko (32-0, 21 KO’s) scored a 6th round TKO victory against 38-year-old Marco Antonio Avendano (30-8-1, 22 KO’s) on Friday night at the Donbass Arena, Donetsk, Ukraine.
Senchenko,33, considered a paper champion in the eyes of a lot of boxing fans, used a stiff jab and powerful left hooks and right hands to dominate and then take out an over-matched Avendano.
In other action on the card, former World Boxing Organization (WBO) super middleweight champion Karoly Balzsay (24-2, 17 KO’s) defeated Ukrainian challenger Stanyslav Kashtanov (28-1, 15 KO’s) by a narrow 12 round unanimous decision. The judges’ scored it 115-113, 115-114 and 116-111, all for the 32-year-old Balzsay.
With this victory, Balzsay captured the vacant WBA World super middleweight title. This is a title that was recently vacated by previous champion Dimitri Sartison in July. The WBA also has a Super World super middleweight title that’s held by Andre Ward, and an interim WBA super middleweight title that is in the possession of Brian Magee. It’s kind of a mess as you can see.
