Roach: I’ve got two fighters [Khan and Pacquiao] that can beat Mayweather

By William Mackay: Trainer Freddie Roach is looking to pump up his fighter Amir Khan for a bout against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2012. Pretty much nobody sees Khan as having a chance in a million in winning that fight, but that’s not keeping Roach from telling the world that he does.

It’s one of things where Khan will get popular even in getting destroyed by Mayweather, so you can’t blame Roach for pushing for the fight. Let’s face it, though, Khan isn’t in Mayweather’s league and won’t be until Mayweather loses his talent from aging. By then, other fighters will be able to take him down as well, not just Khan.

In an interview at boxingfutures.com, Roach said “I think I’ve got two guys [Khan and Manny Pacquiao] that I can beat Mayweather with and whoever meets him first I don’t care.”

I think Pacquiao might be able to hang with Mayweather for a round or two, but he’s a fighter that Mayweather would make look really bad because of how wide open Pacquiao is. He makes so many mistakes that it would be easy for Mayweather. The truth of the matter is Pacquiao would be even easier for Mayweather than Khan, although both would be easy fights for Mayweather. Roach has zero fighters that can beat Mayweather, and that’s just the way it is. Roach also thought that David Haye would beat Wladimir Klitschko without any problems. As we saw in that fight, Roach was so far off with his prediction it wasn’t even funny.

Roach is also hyping his middleweight contender Peter Quillin and wants in the worst way to get a fight between him and Sergio Martinez. Quillin, like Khan, stands no chance against Martinez. But it’s a fight that would make Quillin popular even in getting wiped out by Martinez, as long as it’s not too one-sided.
