By Dan Ambrose: Robert Guerrero has accomplished a lot in his short career with titles captured at both the featherweight and super featherweight division. Guerrero will be moving up in weight to his third weight class in the past couple years to take on WBA light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana for the World Boxing Association regular light welterweight title on August 27th at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.

Guerrero, a fighter that his promotional team Golden Boy Promotions is really high on right now, just finished dominating lightweight contender Michael Katsidis in his last fight in an impressive 12 round unanimous decision.

It wasn’t as impressive as the 9th round TKO win that Juan Manuel Marquez recorded in the fight just before his, but it was pretty close. Some boxing fans see Maidana as a slightly more powerful and bigger version of Katsidis and feel this is the reason why Guerrero should beat Maidana.

I don’t know that I agree with that. Katsidis can only punch with his left hand, and has very little power with his right. Maidana, in contrast, is a fighter with excellent punching power with both hands. Indeed, Maidana can work you over with either hand and he’s a bigger overall puncher compared to Katsidis. Guerrero likes to slug with his opponents, and he’s going to have a hard time resisting that impulse against Maidana because he’s going to be pressuring Guerrero all night long in front of his him crowd, forcing him to fight whether he wants to or not.

Guerrero has overpowered most of his opponents with a combination of size and brute strength. However, he’s moving up in weight for the third time in two years and he doesn’t have the same kind of power that he possessed at featherweight. He’s facing guy that him in terms of build and who has more power. Guerrero will have the boxing skills advantage but they may not be much help to him with Maidana taking away all of his space and forcing him to fight a primitive brawl.
