Image: Khan doubts Guerrero injury, thinks Maidana payed him a step aside feeBy William Mackay: Earlier today it was announced that Robert Guerrero (29-1-1, 18 KO’s) suffered a bad injury to his left shoulder during a sparring session on Wednesday, and the injury is severe enough to knock him out of his important fight against WBA light welterweight champion Marcos Maidana on August 27th.

However, WBA Super World light welterweight champion Amir Khan doubts the authenticity of Guerrero’s injury, saying this on his twitter site: “No injury. I reckon Maidana payed off Guerrero step aside money so he can become the WBA champ because I have moved up as WBA super champ.”

I never heard anything more ridiculous in my life. First of all, Maidana would never pay someone one just so that he can avoid a fight. That’s not who he is. He’s someone that wants to earn his titles in the ring by fighting it out. Secondly, Guerrero isn’t the type to fake an injury for a little money. The guy wants to fight for the title and he gains a lot more by fighting Maidana than he would by taking a small step aside fee if one were given to him. I don’t buy into what Khan is saying.

Maidana gains nothing from paying Guerrero to step aside because he still won’t get a shot at a rematch with Khan. That’s not going to happen whether the Guerrero fight is off or not. Even if the World Boxing Association ordered Khan to fight Maidana, do you honestly think Khan would do it? I don’t. I think Khan would vacate the title so quick your head would be spinning. Maidana gets nothing from the Guerrero fight not taking place because there is no upside to this. Khan doesn’t want any part of fighting Maidana again, and the WBA can’t force him to take this fight if he doesn’t want it.
