Is there anyone left for Vitali Klitschko?

By John F. McKenna (McJack): World Boxing Council (WBC) heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (42-2, 39 KO’s) as everyone knows will be facing former cruiserweight and light heavyweight champion Tomasz Adamek (44-1, 28 KO’s) on September 10 in Wroclaw Poland. “Goral” as Adamek is known to his fans is given little chance to defeat the elder Klitschko who turned 40 years old on July 19.

Vitali has taken some flak from boxing fans and writers who do not think Tomasz is a worthy challenger for “Dr. Steelhammer”. But to be honest there are not a lot of heavyweights out there for Vitali to face. The 6’7 ½” inch Ukrainian has pretty much eliminated any opponent who was given even a small chance of defeating him since his return to the ring in October of 2008. In that memorable battle with Sam Peter, Vitali battered the “Nigerian Nightmare” into submission before he retired on his stool after the 8th round. Klitschko won every round in the process, which has been a common occurrence in all of his recent fights.

The question Vitali’s critics need to be asked is if not Adamek than, who? Who in the heavyweight division poses a real threat to Vitali Klitschko? Klitscho’s career since winning the WBC title fight against Peter his has been nothing short of remarkable. He was then 37 years old and one would expect him to be slowing down. Instead Vitali has improved in every facet of his game and won virtually every round of the seven fights he has had since October 2008.

In some of Vitali’s fights, such as his match with Albert Sosnowski in May 2010, those in attendance got the impression that he could have ended matters whenever he chose to.
Vitali is always conscious of the loyalty his fans have for him and he wants to be sure they get their moneys worth.

Vitali showed his annoyance with Odlanier Solis on March 19 when Solis went down after receiving a blow to the temple, severely injuring his knee in the process of going down. First round KO’s are not what Klitschko is all about.

“Dr. Steelhammer” cannot afford the luxury of prolonging his bout with Tomasz Adamek. To go to the scorecards is always risky, particularly when you are fighting in the enemy camp.

Going forward it is difficult to find an opponent who will give Vitali Klitschko a true test.
