Is Pacquiao ducking Sergio Martinez?

By Chris Williams: Bob Arum, the promoter for Manny Pacquiao, is supposedly running out of opponents for his cash cow fighter Manny Pacquiao to fight. After exhausting most of the fighters in his stable near the welterweight division, Arum would like to match Pacquiao up with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

The problem is Arum doesn’t seem eager for Pacquiao to accept the random blood tests from the agency that Mayweather wants, the USADA. As such, you can forget a fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao happening until Arum has a change of mind about the testing.

But there is one opponent who can bring in huge numbers as well and would have excellent chance of whipping Pacquiao and that’s Sergio Martinez. He’s fought most of his career at welterweight and light welterweight.

Only recently did Martinez move up to middleweight. At only 5’10”, Martinez is smaller than Antonio Margarito, a fighter that Pacquiao recently fought and beat by a wide decision.

Arum was perfectly okay with Pacquiao fighting Margarito, but he’s not okay with him fighting Martinez for some reason. Of course, Margarito was as slow as molasses and didn’t look anything like the fighter that destroyed Miguel Cotto in 2008.

Martinez isn’t too big for Pacquiao. He’s only two inches taller than Mayweather, and his reach is about the same as Floyd. The only difference I can see is that Martinez can really punch and has excellent boxing skills.

So why isn’t Pacquiao fighting him? Perhaps it’s because Martinez can punch and he can box. He’s not slow, he’s not old and he’s not someone that Pacquiao can outbox easily. I guess that makes Martinez someone that will never got chosen to fight Pacquiao despite being little bigger than Mayweather and smaller than Margarito.

However, just because Pacquiao doesn’t want to fight Martinez now it doesn’t mean he won’t want to fight him in say three years. We just saw Pacquiao fight 39-year-old Shane Mosley. When Mosley was a little younger and fighting well, he couldn’t land a fight with Pacquiao no matter how hard he tried. However, what do you know?

As soon as Mosley started struggling in a loss to Mayweather and a gift draw with Sergio Mora, Mosley was suddenly given a fight with Pacquiao. Juan Manuel Marquez gave Pacquiao fits in two fights. The last time they fought in 2008, many people felt that Marquez deserved to get a decision.

Pacquiao won the fight by a 12 round split decision in a very controversial fight. I had Marquez winning the fight by two rounds. Marquez wanted to fight Pacquiao a third time immediately after, but was ignored until recently. As it happens, Marquez is now 38-years-old and didn’t look good in his last fight. So, I think Martinez could get a fight with Pacquiao in two or three years.
