Image: Groves signs with Warren, will likely fight Kenny Anderson nextBy Scott Gilfoid: The good news is British and Commonwealth super middleweight champion George Groves (13-0, 10 KO’s) has signed with British promoter Frank Warren to a promotional agreement for three years. This will obviously help the career of the 23-year-old Groves because he’ll get access to bigger fighters, and boxing fans will have a chance to see him back in with James DeGale sooner rather than later.

Had he stayed with Hayemaker Promotions there’s no telling when Groves would fight DeGale again. At least this makes all the more likely the two will be mixing it up at some point. The bad news is Groves is rumored to be fighting Kenny Anderson (13-1, 9 KO’s) again. Groves already stopped Anderson in the 6th round last November, and I really don’t see any point in a do over.

Groves was put down in the 3rd by a left hook from Anderson, but he came back to take Anderson out with a flurry of power shots in the 6th. Why a rematch is needed is beyond me. Groves won that fight so he should be moving upwards, not backwards. I hate this fight. But it’s good if you want to waste more time.

Groves will be joining DeGale, Kevin Mitchell, John Murray and WBO super featherweight champion Ricky Burns as part of Warren’s team.

Warren said this in a press release today: “Everyone is asking about a return with James [DeGale], who I represent, and it is an obvious fight that will definitely happen again…One thing is for sure the public will want to see it again.”

Hopefully, Frank doesn’t wait too long before putting them back in together because I’d hate to see Groves get beaten by someone and then no one will care a fig about seeing DeGale beat him in a rematch. But, yeah, a rematch between Groves and DeGale is a guarantee moneymaker right now.

Groves is now in the right place to get the big fights. I would skip the Anderson bout and start putting Groves in with some of the bottom ranked super middleweight world level contenders. Groves should lose the British and Commonwealth straps. He doesn’t need those belts to be holding him back, forcing him to fight over-matched opposition over and over again, possibly resulting in his career being stunted. He’s been there, done that and needs to move on. Can’t stay at this level.

As far as the Anderson fight goes, Groves used a lot of the feints that David Haye likes to use when he fights. Groves moved around constantly, feinting and landing shots here and there. By the 3rd, Groves was looking exhausted from all the useless movement he was making and ran into a left hook from Anderson that put him down. Groves finally got a clue that he didn’t need to move around so much in the 6th and turned the attack on Anderson to take him out.

I suppose Groves wants to improve on the mistakes he made last time. I would start with getting rid of that ridiculous movement. He doesn’t need that for a guy like Anderson. He should be able to take him out by matching power with power. If not, he can always run around the ring and bide his time until he sees an opportunity.
