Froch thinks David Haye will retire

By William Mackay: WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch thinks that former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye will opt to retire in October rather than continuing with his boxing career.

Froch met with Haye recently and they had a chance to talk at length. Froch came away from the meeting with the impression that Haye will wrap up his career in October when he turns 31 rather than sticking around and trying to get a rematch with IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, who recently beat Haye by a 12 round decision on July 2nd in Germany.

Haye could make huge money if he were to fight Wladimir or his brother WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko.

However, Haye has zero interest in fighting Vitali, and wanted a straight rematch with Wladimir rather than fighting once or twice against other heavyweights to try and redeem himself before fighting him again.

Froch said this to the dailystar.co.uk: “I had a nice five-hour tour of the island with David Haye. I don’t think he is going to fight on. He didn’t give me a definitive answer but listening to him, it doesn’t really sound like it. He wanted to go out on a better note. Whether he will fight again, personally I don’t think he will. He’s younger than me so it would make sense for me to announce my retirement – but I’ve got plans.”

Of course you know if Haye quits he’ll be seen as a quitter by a lot of boxing fans, someone that fought a handful of aging heavyweights and then cashed out against Wladimir. And the way Haye fought against Wladimir didn’t win him any fans either, as Haye fought like someone who was very afraid to get hit.

Haye never really even tried to mount a consistent offense. Haye’s humiliation was complete afterwards when he partially blamed his poor performance on a broken baby toe on his right foot.

If Haye does retire now a lot of people are going to think he really didn’t love the sport and was just someone that tricked a lot of fans into thinking he had a chance against Wladimir by talking himself up and fighting a bunch old guys at heavyweight to get to Klitschko. Haye more or less made a name for himself by mentioning the Klitschkos at every opportunity in the media after moving up to the heavyweight division.
