Expect to see a Cotto-Pacquiao mismatch real soon

Image: Expect to see a Cotto-Pacquiao mismatch real soonBy Chris Williams: WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (36-2, 29 Ko’s) revealed that he wants a rematch with Manny Pacquiao after Cotto’s fight with Antonio Margarito on December 3rd in New York. After the Pacquiao rematch, which will be more of a mismatch with Cotto taking another beating like he took in losing to Pacquiao in 2009, Cotto then wants to fight WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez.

I expect for Cotto to get the Pacquiao rematch, because he and Pacquiao both fight for Bob Arum of Top Rank, but Cotto can pretty much forget about a fight against Alvarez after Pacquiao wipes Cotto out. If Cotto wants the Alvarez fight bad enough, he can stick around the sport long enough to make a comeback and rebuild his name. But he’s certainly not going to get a fight against Alvarez by getting knocked out again by Pacquiao.

I don’t know who would want to see Cotto get destroyed again by Pacquiao. It was so one-sided the first time that I just don’t think too many fans would want a second helping of that unless they gave the fight away for free along with some kind of gimmick giveaway like free tickets to Disneyland or something.

I personally wouldn’t be up for paying to see Pacquiao annihilate Cotto next year on pay per view. If Pacquiao never fights Cotto again it would be too soon for me. The thing of it is a Cotto-Pacquiao rematch will likely happen if Cotto starts putting the pressure on Arum, especially if he talks retirement. On the top of my head, I can think of 20 fighters I’d rather see Pacquiao fight than Cotto.

It’s like watching a movie you’ve seen before and you know how it’s going to end. No thank you. Watching Cotto fight a rematch with an old and depleted Margarito is enough for me. I don’t need to see Pacquiao blast Cotto away for a second time. It’s too bad this fight is likely to happen in 2012.
