Image: Donaire to fight Narvaez on Ocotber 22nd on HBOBy Chris Williams: WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (26-1, 18 KO’s) will be fighting undefeated WBO super flyweight champion Omar Narvaez (35-0-2, 19 KO’s) on October 22nd on HBO, according to news from ringtv. I kind of like this fight, but it’s still a match-up that’s heavily slanted in Donaire’s favor. He’s 5’7″, and Narvaez is a 5’3″ super flyweight.

This is yet another smaller opponent for Donaire. He eats up small guys like Narvaez. The only thing I do like about this fight is Narvaez’s power, chin and toughness. He might be able to get in close enough to knock Donaire out if he’s able to get past his left hook. It’s going to be difficult because Donaire is lightning quick with that punch and can throw it even while retreating.

Narvaez is just a guy that likes to wade in and battle guys on the inside. I don’t think he’s going to be ready for Donaire’s power on October 22nd. This is like putting a lesser version of Fernando Montiel in with Donaire and expecting him to do well.

The Donaire-Narvarez fight will be taking place at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. This should help Donaire, who comes from Hayward, California.

Narvaez, 36, is getting up there in age and has held the World Boxing Organization title since May 2010. He’s defended the belt three times, beating Victor Zaleta, Cesar Seda and William Irina. None of them are well known fighters, and Narvaez will likely be able to hold onto his WBO belt for some time to come because of how weak the super flyweight division is right now.
