Image: Does Matthysse have to KO Erik Morales to win on September 17th?By Dan Ambrose: If you look at some of the recent fights of light welterweight contender Lucas Matthysse (28-2, 26 KO’s) you’ll see that he really got took to the cleaners in getting beaten in controversial losses to Zab Judah and Devon Alexander. Many boxing fans feel that Matthysse should have won both of these fights, but was beaten by more popular fighters.

Now Matthysse is once again facing a much more popular fighter in 35-year-old Erik Morales (51-7, 35 KO’s) for the vacant WBC light welterweight title. Ignoring the fact that it’s a complete joke to have these two fighters competing for the World Boxing Council title that was unfairly stripped from previous champion Timothy Bradley, this is a bout where Matthysse has got to really dominate Morales if he wants to get a decision win.

I hate to see things like that because it makes me appeared jaded, but that’s how I see this. Morales is the money fighter, and with a big cash unification bout a huge possibility between Morales and IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan, it’s going to be hard for Matthysse to win a decision with that kind of importance hanging over this bout.

Khan already tipped his hand about who wants to fight next, saying he would like to fight Morales. Everyone knows that now and it’s going to be tough for Matthysse. If I’m Matthysse’s trainer, my advice would be to try and shoot for a knockout as much as possible against Morales. Matthysse has got to least put Morales on the canvas twice to ensure that he gets a win, and even then I’m not so sure about. He’s got to really dominate and not let any of the rounds even be slightly close. Morales is only capable of fighting for a short period in every round, and yet the judges gave him a lot of the rounds in his last fight against Marcos Maidana. I saw it as an easy win for Maidana, but it showed you how hard it is to beat a famous fighter like Morales.
