By Sean McDaniel: WBO super featherweight champion Ricky Burns (32-2, 9 KO’s) could be soon facing undefeated contender Adrien Broner (21-0, 17 KO’s) shortly after one more fight, according to the latest boxing news.

Broner is scheduled to fight Domenic Salcido (18-3, 9 KO’s in a huge mismatch on September 16th, and after Broner beats him he’ll be on course for a fight against Burns. For his part, Burns is looking to get a fight against #2 Ring ranked contender Mzonke Fana, but it’s unclear whether that fight will materialize. More than likely Burns will have to find another opponent to take before facing Broner in early 2012.

At this point, Burns really needs a fight against the #1 World Boxing Organization ranked Broner because Burns’s last fight against Nicky Cook, which resulted with Cook collapsing due to a bad back in the 1st round, made Burns look more than a little bad because he was part of this fight. In hindsight, matching the unranked Cook with a champion like Burns was very, very bad idea.

They could have picked anyone out of the top 15 and it would have been a better option than to put Cook in there with him. Fighting the 22-year-old Broner will earn Burns a ton of respect from boxing fans who have been more than a little disappointed in the caliber of opposition that Burns has fought since capturing the WBO title with a win over Roman Martinez in 2010.

Broner recently made easy work of Jason Litzau, stopping him in the 1st round with a flurry of shots on June 18th. In his fight before that, Broner defeated former WBO super bantamweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon by a 10 round unanimous decision in March of this year. Those two fighters are by far the best names on Broner’s resume but they showed that he’s got the talent to compete against the best in the division.

Burns will have major problems with Broner, because he’s so much like Floyd Mayweather Jr with his fighting style and physical tools. Burns isn’t particularly fast or powerful. He’s just someone that outworks his opponents by throwing a lot of shots. However, he’s going to have to come up with a different plan if he wants to beat Broner because he’s too good for that kind of approach. You have to bring something completely unique if you want to beat Broner, and there’s no real blue print in how to beat him at this point.
