Berto, 27, just lost his WBC belt against Victor Ortiz in a close 12 round unanimous decision on April 16th, so now Berto wants a chance to capture another belt without having to wait for the smoke to clear from the Ortiz vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr fight. By picking the 35-year-old Zaveck to fight instead of the Mayweather-Ortiz winner, Berto increases the likelihood of him winning by a substantial amount.

Berto can beat the little known Zaveck, but we already saw he couldn’t beat Ortiz. And Berto would likely lose even worse against the unbeaten Mayweather.

Zaveck has held the IBF title since 2009, but still hasn’t fought a real quality fighter even after two years. It’s not like he’s gone out of his way trying to get big fights because just look at who Zaveck has fought: Rodolfo Ezequiel Martinez, Rafael Jackiewicz and Paul Degado. It’s nice that Zaveck has finally stepped it up after all this time, but it’s sad that it’s taken him two years to get to this point.

Berto will have a big speed and power advantage in this fight. In looking at Zaveck’s fights against Degado and Martinez, he’s very slow and has problems putting his punches together. He’s got good power, but not enough to trouble a fighter with Berto’s skills.

This should be an easy win for Berto. Look for him to destroy Zaveck in six or seven rounds of a one-sided fight.
