By Daniel Burns: Saturday 4th September 2010, I made the short trip from my home town of Dundee to Glasgow Scotland the reason being a Scottish boxer was away to embark on a world title fight for the W.B.O super featherweight championship of the world.
It was the first time in five years that a Scottish boxer had fought for a word title in Scotland and I wasn’t missing this for the world. I was ringside that night with my younger brother supporting our fellow countryman. Ricky Burns (32-2, 9 KO’s) lifted himself off the canvas in the first round to break the heart of the battled hardened Puerto Rican hard man Roman “Rocky” Martinez (24-1-1, 15 KO’s) to win a unanimous points decision at the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow. Burns fought like a man possessed that night, he fought like a Scotsman.
Some criticism has been throwing at Burns for not fighting better opposition to defend his world title against but listen the man could only fight who is put in front of him. Burns has let it been known he wants the best in the superfeather division. It has recently been reported that hot-shot undefeated American and mandatory challenger for the W.B.O crown Adrian Broner (21-0, 17KO’s) will be next in line for Burns and potentially it could be happening in the States. Broner is very slick boxer and has a good knockout record Golden boy promotions are expecting big things from the young American and what I have seen of him, this kid he has the potential to go far in boxing.
Richard schaefer chief executive of G.B.P was reported to be in London trying to crack a deal with Burns’s promoter frank warren and rumours surrounding the fight that it could even be happening by the autumn. I hope that this fight goes ahead and it goes ahead in the States it gives Burns the plat form and more to show piece his skills, to show he is a excellent fighter that us Scots no he is and it will give him exposure in the States that all boxers desire. Burns has an excellent work rate and throws a lot of punches and Broner is a very slick boxer that can punch, this fight has the makings of being a war and will give each fighter the test that they need. I would expect both fighters to be at there best and for Burns to produce the same magical performance that he produced on that night in Glasgow. This fight is a win-win situation for both camps and there’s no doubt in my mind that Burns will shine in this fight. I just hope if it does end up in going ahead in the States that where ever it maybe held they have plenty of whiskey and beer stocked up for us Scots coming over I would expect thousands of Scots to be coming to the States in there kilts to support Ricky Burns and I for one will be on the first flight out to support my fellow countryman as I done in Glasgow to watch him fly the flag for his country.
Good luck to both fighters if they do end up meeting this autumn I’m sure the Scots and the Americans will be in a joyful mood no matter what the result would be.
Stay tuned for more….
