By David Kassel: When this week’s Friday Night Fights main event was announced months ago, hardcore fight fans everywhere began to salivate at the promise of a fight of the year candidate. Both Pawel Wolak and Delvin Rodriguez have delivered in the ring in the past and both always put on an action-packed show. This fight was no exception.

The two battled to a majority draw as one judge scored the bout 97-93 for Rodriguez, while the other two had it 95-95. The true winners of the fight however were the fans.

Do all boxers need to be all-action reckless warriors? No. Should there be more fights like tonight and less like Pacquiao-Mosley or Mayweather-De La Hoya? Yes! In 6 months casual boxing fans won’t remember the names of the combatants, but most will remember this fight and think this is what boxing needs to be.

This fight was everything that was right with the sport. Most of the fight was fought in a phone booth, and not once did referee Steve Smoger call for a break in the action. He let the fighters work out of it on their own. The fight surely could have been stopped due to the grotesque swelling over Wolak’s right eye in the 7th round, but the doctor said allowed the war to continue.

Everyone who witnessed this battle knew they were watching greatness unfold and it’s something fight fans won’t soon forget. So to Pawel Wolak and Delvin Rodriguez we say thank you for making fights that keep the fans coming back and keeping the sport of boxing alive!
