By Dallan O’Donnell: Recently Freddie Roach, the trainer for Manny Pacquaio has been quoted in an interview at the wildcard Gym as saying “I don’t think Mayweather will ever fight Pacquaio. They have more chance of getting Floyd in the ring Than Manny”.

This is surely the first signs of the great trainer saying publicly that his fighter wants nothing to do with Mayweather. Mayweather has made his feelings known; most recently at a press conference in L.A. for his upcoming bout with WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz, saying “Yes, Manny Pacquaio, You’re next”.

This was then followed up by Bob Arum (Pacquaios promoter) claiming Pacquaio has agreed to Floyd’s random drug tests; all be it with its own catches that he wants it done independently and not by the USADA. But still for a second we were edging closer to a fight, but now it seems we are back at square one with Roach’s comments.

His comments come as a surprise to me. I always had the feeling that Roach believed in Manny beyond any doubt that he would beat anyone in or around his weight division. Maybe, like many his view has been changed after Pacquaio failed to dazzle against the skilful veteran, Shane Mosley.

Hopefully it is just Roach keeping the fire burning nicely trying to ruffle Mayweather a little more, but new doubts will be in all our minds. If Roach doesn’t believe that Manny can beat Floyd then where in his camp can Pacquaio turn to for support? Freddie views Manny as the son he never had. Pacquaio is his family and boxing is his life, we know this. He is not married and hasn’t any kids. Pacquaio sees Roach as a father figure.

Maybe it is this close bond that Roach wants to see Pacquaio go out winning, rather than retiring defeated by Mayweather and no longer having the greatest fighter ever etched upon him. I still believe he is the greatest. He is a phenom. He has fought everyone there is to fight.

If Mayweather was more active throughout the years then yes, quite possibly he could be called the greatest. Until the two fight we just won’t know. The two will fight it makes too much sense not to.
