Williams deserved the win over Lara

By Scott Gilfoid: Paul Williams (40-2, 27 KO’s) deserved the 12 round majority decision victory over Erislandy Lara (15-1-1, 10 KO’s) last night at the Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, New Jersey.

The judges scored it 114-114, 115-114 and 116-114 for Williams. I don’t agree that Lara was robbed or anything close to that. The better man won the fight and that was Williams. Lara just wasn’t busy enough in the 12 rounds. For starters, he was too small and too weak with his punches.

When he was landing cleanly with left hands, those punches were like the jabs from Williams. The fact of the matter is Lara had no power on his shots and wasn’t throwing enough to win rounds. If you look at Williams, he was constantly throwing and landing short punches that were landing with more force than Lara’s weak left hand leads.

The man had no power, that’s just the way is. I can’t give rounds to guys that are throwing shots every once in a while and totally lacking power. Williams was tagging Lara at will with shots and had the left side of his head looking like it was about to pop. I think Lara needs to move down in weight because he’s too small and weak for junior middleweight. His power was nowhere in this fight and Williams kept tagging him with nonstop punches.

I don’t want to see a rematch because the better man won this fight. I think two of the judges that scored it for Williams need to be congratulated because they did a marvelous job of scoring the fight. Better luck next time for Lara. If he wants to beat guys like Williams, he needs to find some power somewhere because throwing weak left hands every now and then isn’t going to get the job done.

The judges deserve an award for their excellent judging of the fight. I don’t ever want to see Williams have to waste time beating Lara again. Williams needs to move on to bigger and better things than fighting small, weak punchers like Lara.
