Image: Will David Haye defeat Wladimir Klitschko?By Gerardo Granados: David Haye was a cruiserweight champion and as a heavyweight he needs to defeat Wladimir to establish himself as a legit heavyweight champion in order to be recognized world wide by boxing fans. Wladimir Klitschko is a veteran fighter who has been able to dominate an era in which the quality of opposition is not the best of all times but that is not his fault at all. Next Saturday June 2nd in the Imtech-Arena, Altona, Hamburg, Germany, and David Haye might defeat Wladimir Klitschko and you better not be surprised.

Left jab then hard right strait or hard right cross, do this rings a bell? How hard it is to adjust or to prevent the attack of Wladimir Klitschko?

I have never seen a punching bag hit back, and less have seen the punching bag moving out of my range. If David stays in front of Wladimir the story will repeat it self once more time and Klitschko will knockout Haye.

Haye speed and mobility might confuse Klitschko because he is used to face almost immobile fighters who tend to stay in front of the champion just at the end of his long reach. But what will happen if Haye bob and weave moving fast to his side getting inside after slipping his long jab? It seems that Haye has the perfect style to defeat Klitschko and he might be able to counter him with quite ease.

Wladimir is a really big heavyweight, he is strong as an ox, weights around 240 pounds of solid muscle for his fights, stands 6´6 ½” tall and his reach 81 inches. Haye is not as big and weights around 210 pounds. Size doesn’t mean that much when you have good boxing skills and good power; does the reader remember the giant Primo Carnera? He was stopped by Max Baer in 11 rounds.

Haye has good defensive skills and has the mobility to be able to slip or block the power punches of Wladimir and that might be the key for his success. David is no Mike Tyson but he has great speed and enough power to hurt any heavyweight and if Corrie Sanders was able to finish off Wladimir in only two rounds with an aggressive attack and relentless pressure then David definitely has big chance to succeed. Ross Puritty could have hurt Wladimir if trainer Fritz Sdunek had not step in to the ring back in 1998, do you remember Ross? Lamon Brewster pulled himself off the canvas and stopped Klitschko in five; do you remember the referee intervention in round five? No need to say that Wladimir Klitschko will never match George Chuvalo´s chin because once he is hurt he is on his way down, neither will he ever match the defensive skills of Ali.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t consider Wladimir Klitschko as an all time great but I admit that he is the most dominant heavyweight in the last years. I respect him as a champion but in my opinion he is not as skilled as Ali, Lewis or Holmes were. In most of his fights he looks so dominant because he has engaged against tailor made opponents, the ones that lack of mobility or fail to pressure him hitting him with more than one punch at a time; most of the time his rivals stay in front of him swallowing jab after jab and his follow up hard right.

If David is hurt by Wladimir the fight might come to an end due Haye does not have a granite chin, but Wladimir will also have the risk to be knocked out if David is able to connect him with a clean shot and then follow up with his fast combinations. Haye is by far the most dangerous fighter that Wladimir has faced in the last ten years and perhaps only Vitali has a real chance to defeat his brother if David is not able.

Maybe if Haye defeats both Klitschko brothers he would be considered as great as Michael Spinks or Evander Holyfield, or at least as good as Michael Moorer was.

I will put my money on Haye next weekend and I will even bet on David to stop Wladimir, but for sure we all can bet that this fight won’t last until the end of the twelve round.
