Warren: Chisora will fight in September against a top 10 opponent

By Sean McDaniel: Former British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion Dereck Chisora (14-1, 9 KO’s) isn’t going to get much of a rest after losing a one-sided 12 round unanimous decision last weekend to big 6’9″ Tyson Fury at the Wembley Arena, Wembley, London.

Chisora, who came into the fight looking fat and slow at 261, ran out of gas after the first few rounds and only had enough energy to fight in brief spurts during the fight. This enabled the much busier Fury to pound out a decision by the scores 117-112, 117-112 and 118-111.

Frank Warren, the promote for Chisora, was disappointed with Chisora coming into the fight overweight and said to thesun.co.uk “Chisora will need to get his act together quickly. He will be out again in September against a top 10 ranked opponent.”

Wow! I wonder who that will be. If Chisora was out of his league against Fury, who isn’t ranked in the top 10, I wonder who Chisora could beat that is ranked that high? September is just around the corner and that’s not a lot of time to take off the kind of blubber that Chisora has put in the past year. He came into the fight against Fury close to 20 pounds over his normal weight. I seriously doubt that Chisora can take that kind of tonnage off in only two months without draining himself to the point where he’s losing muscle and will be weakened.

There are some weak heavyweights in the top 10 that I think an in shape Chisora can beat, but only if he’s able to throw 40 to 50 punches per round without gassing out. He’s not going to beat the better heavyweights only fighting in spurts. Chisora has got to not only fight like Joe Frazier, who seems to resemble a little in the ring, but he also has to be able to match his work rate. Right now, Chisora looks only capable of throwing 20 punches per round without gasping for breath and spending the rest of the time with his back against the ropes.
