Tarver: I’m not going to be a stationary target for Green

By Dan Ambrose: Former light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver (28-6, 19 KO’s) doesn’t plan on standing right in front of the hard hitting International Boxing Organization (IBO) cruiserweight champion Danny Green (31-3, 27 KO’s) next week in their fight on July 20th at the Entertainment Centre in Sydney, Australia.Tarver is a lot more mobile than the guys that Green has been beating for most of his career, and this is where Green may have problems in this fight.

Speaking ninemen.com.uu, the 42-year-old Tarver said “What Danny Green thinks is I am going to be a stationary target. He’s got another thing coming. He’s going to have to play hide and seek all night long with me.”

Green has done well in his comeback against fighters that have either come straight at him or else just stood there and let him punch away. Green has done a good job of selecting for either older shot fighters or ones with little power to really challenge him. The 38-year-old Green has looked good but look at who he’s faced: Roy Jones Jr. Paul Briggs, Manny Siaca, Julio Cesar Dominguez, Anthony Van Niekerk and BJ Flores.

Green might as well be coming into the Tarver fight with his last fight being four years ago against Stipe Drews, because that really is the last time that Green fought someone with good skills that had a chance to beat him. Tarver isn’t shot, and won’t be just standing there and letting Green punch away at him. He’s going to be using his punch longer reach, and stiff jab to pound Green and keep on the outside.

At the same time, Tarver’s movement will cause Green a lot of problems. Tarver has problems against guys with fast hands like a prime Roy Jones Jr, and Chad Dawson, but Green isn’t anywhere near as fast as those guys. Tarver will see Green’s punches coming and will be able to get out of the way of his shots without too many problems.
