McGuigan: It’s pointless for Haye to have another fight against Wladimir

By William Mackay: Sky Sports News analyst and former World Boxing Association (WBA) featherweight champion Barry McGuigan doesn’t see any point in a rematch taking place between David Haye and IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko in the future.

McGuigan thinks Haye couldn’t beat Wladimir no matter what he could come up with. McGuigan thinks Wladimir is too big, too skilled and too strong for Haye to beat. But besides that, McGuigan doubts that boxing fans would be interested in paying to see a rematch between Haye and Wladimir.

McGuigan said “Even if he’d [Haye] come forward, he wouldn’t have beaten him anyway. If you look at the fight, he didn’t have the tools to do it. It’s as simple as that. And I don’t think that foot even mattered. Forget about it. I think it’s pointless having another fight because who would want to pay for it? That’s what all the callers are saying. Don’t insult are intelligence. Me as a boxer, looking at the fight, I don’t think he has the tools to win it. I don’t think he could do it. I don’t think coming forward would make a difference. He would walk onto a punch and he’d get knocked out.”

And Haye isn’t making things any easier by saying he wants an immediate rematch rather than letting time go by and picking up some badly needed wins to give boxing fans some confidence in him. Haye just wants a straight rematch, and McGuigan doesn’t see boxing fans wanting to dump their money on that fight, not when the last fight was so utterly one-sided with Wladimir dominating Haye.

McGuigan thought initially after watching the Klitschko-Haye fight that Haye would have done better had he come straight at Wladimir a lot more instead of moving so much and not fighting. However, he later changed his mind and realized that Haye would have likely been stopped quickly had he come at Wladimir. McGuigan thinks that the tools just weren’t there for Haye to win the fight. He lacked the power, size and skills to give Wladimir any problems and nothing would change in a rematch.

I agree with McGuigan, but I do think a lot of British boxing fans would be gullible enough to pay to see another fight between Haye and Klitschko.

All Haye will have to do is talk more about “Secret strategies” and he’ll have British boxing fans purchasing the fight on PPV in droves. Haye seems to be able to play the public like a fiddle. He did a great job with his fight against Audley Harrison and his other fights against aging heavyweights. No one asked the simple question: ‘Why isn’t Haye fighting younger heavyweights that have something left in the tank?’
