Khan-Judah: Khan could be the next Brit to bite the dust

By William Mackay: Things haven’t been going very well for British fighters when fighting against world champions. First we saw Ryan Rhodes get totally schooled in a 12th round knockout against WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez in June, and then came WBA heavyweight champion David Haye who was made to look like an unskilled amateur against IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko.

And now we’ve got WBA Super World light welterweight champion Amir Khna (25-1, 17 KO’s) taking on IBF light welterweight champion Zab Judah (41-6, 28 KO’s) in a unification bout on July 23 at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Like Haye, Khan is confident to the point of being ultra cocky and is even looking past Judah already.

Khan sees a win over Judah as a forgone conclusion. That’s pretty considering how awful Khan looked against Marcos Maidana last year in a hard 12 round decision in December. Khan also had problems against his hand-picked opponent Paul McCloskey in April.

Judah may have lost a step or two but he still punches hard and has better hand speed than any guy that Haye has ever fought before at the pro level. Judah punches at least as hard as Maidana when he loads up on his shots, and with his speed he’s going to hurt Khan if he can land one of his big ones.

It’s no secret that Khan has a weak chin, and if Judah can find it with one of his big left hands or right hooks, Khan will become the third British fighter to get beaten in the past two months when facing world level opposition. This would be especially embarrassing for Khan, because he’s been bragging for so long that he’s the best fighter at light welterweight and is constantly talking about he matches up well with unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr.
