Image: Khan: I've got one more fight at 140 before I move up to 147By William Mackay: For boxing fans hoping that IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-1, 18 KO’s) will stick around the division after he faces the winner of the Erik Morales vs. Jorge Barrio for Timothy Bradley’s stripped title to then fight the winner of the Robert Guerrero vs. Marcos Maidana fight you can forget that. It’s not going to happen.

Khan is saying he only plans on fighting more time at light welterweight, and you can bet it’s going to be the Morales-Barrios winner for the WBC paper title.

“I think I have one more fight in the division before moving up to 147 pounds, where the bigger challenges are,” Khan said to Sky Sports News.

There it is. Khan probably isn’t going to get anywhere near the Maidana-Guerrero winner and will instead cut out after he likely faces Morales, who incidentally just got beat by Maidana.

There’s only a few good fights at welterweight, but not sure that Khan will take them all. Khan will face Floyd Mayweather Jr and lose that fight badly. He will then have to decide whether he wants to fight Victor Ortiz, and I don’t see that happening coming off of a shutout or knockout loss to Mayweather. Khan will probably fight Kell Brook instead of Ortiz or Mike Jones. That’s about it in terms of “Big fights” at welterweight, because Khan already said he won’t fight Manny Pacquiao because they’re friends.

There’s no one else worth fighting unless Khan drags out another old lion like Shane Mosley to fight. Like the Morales, I don’t see there being any demand for a Khan vs. Mosley fight. It would just be money bout and a complete joke given how horrible Mosley has been looking. But no way do I see Khan fighting Mike Jones or Ortiz. Can’t see those fights happening because those guys can punch and are both young. Maybe Golden Boy will put Saul Alvarez in with Khan. That’s probably what they’ll do.

Khan will lose to Alvarez and get knocked out. Khan won’t fight Miguel Cotto if he loses to Mayweather, Ortiz, Jones or Alvarez. He’ll have too many losses at that point it won’t be worth it. Looking at the guys that Khan has been matched against, other than Mayweather, I see Khan only being put in with guys that his promoter thinks he can actually beat without getting knocked around.

That means that probably Ortiz and Jones are off the list. A fight against Mosley will be accepted because he seems to be unable to pull the trigger now that he’s nearing 40. A bout against Alvarez will probably happen because of the big money a Khan-Alvarez fight will generate. Khan will get beaten but like the Mayweather fight, it won’t matter because of the money Khan will get.

In other words, Khan will likely be matched the way that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is being matched by him being put in with guys that Khan can look good against. Anyway, that’s my estimation of Khan his future at the welterweight and junior middleweight divisions after he leaves the 140 pound class after a Morales fight.

The big fights that Khan speaks about will be against Mayweather, Mosley and Alvarez. Khan will likely get knocked out by Alvarez and Mayweather, but beat Mosley, who will be similar to Khan’s fights against other old past their best fighters like Zab Judah, Marco Antonio Barrera and Morales.
