Khan: Critics wants to see me get knocked out

By Jason Kim: IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-1, 18 KO’s) reportedly has a legion of critics on his twitter page who go there daily to insult Khan. He takes a positive approach to it and doesn’t let it get to him, but it goes with the territory.

Khan may not like the criticism, but this is pretty common for all the top fighters to take heat. However, a lot of them don’t have twitter pages, so they’re unable to see as much of the criticism unless they cruise boxing forums on the internet. For Khan, he posts daily on his twitter page and that makes him an inviting target for his critics.

Khan said this to the guardian.co.uk about his critics: “When fights are made, people say, ‘You’re going to get knocked out.’ But the critics are always going to buy the fights and want to see me knocked out. It ain’t happening.”

Part of the reason Khan gets so much flak from boxing fans is that he seems in a big hurry to get a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. A lot of fans see a fight against a class fighter like Mayweather as something you either earn by taking on and heating the best fighters over and over again or you get picked out by Mayweather. The knock on Khan is that he got stopped by Breidis Prescott and then never attempted to avenge the defeat. Instead of trying to even the score with Prescott, some boxing fans think that Khan waited until Prescott was beaten twice by other fighters and then used that as an excuse not to have to fight him again. That’s something Khan will have to live with until he does try and avenge the defeat – if he ever does.

It’s only going to get worse for Khan if Prescott starts beating the top fighters left and right. The other issue fans have with Khan is that his choice of opponents isn’t always top notch. For example, Khan has fought guys like Paulie Malignaggi, Dmitri Salita, Paul McCloskey, and Oisin Fagan in the past three year. Khan’s critics want to see Khan fight guys like Prescott, Lucas Matthysse, Devon Alexander, and Maidana in a rematch.

Khan is trying to get a fight with Timothy Bradley, but he’s not someone the critics are on Khan’s case about. They realize he wants to fight Bradley, but he’s not able to right now.
