Haye: I would have knocked Wladimir out if he couldn’t throw his right hand

Haye, 30, was unable to get past Wladimir’s jab with any consistency in the fight and often when he would get in range, Wladimir would greet him with a laser straight right hand that would get Haye’s attention.

After the fight, Haye said this to Sky Sports News: “He’s a great fighter, he was really good. But if he couldn’t throw his right hand I would have got him out of there.” As you can see Haye is still having problems coming to terms with the fact that he not only lost but he was pretty much dominated by Wladimir all night long. And this wasn’t a really aggressive Wladimir who was looking knockout, this was a conservative Wladimir who was taking no chances that he might get caught with one of Haye’s big shots and instead played it safe by fighting defensively.

But by saying if Wladimir didn’t use his right hand is kind of a silly thing for Haye to say. It’s like saying ‘if Wladimir didn’t throw any punches at all and just stood there with his arms down, I’d win.’ The problem is Wladimir did throw right hands and he did have Haye looking like a timid rabbit not wanting to get hit, and he did have Haye running all around the ring in order not to get clobbered by Wladimir.

Haye put the blame for his defeat partly on injuring his little toe on his right foot three weeks ago. He says he didn’t cancel the fight because he didn’t want to let down the paying fans. However, Haye might have been better having done that because if the injury was debilitating enough to the point where he couldn’t push off with his right leg then he wasn’t doing himself or his fans any good by still taking the fight with Klitschko.
