Guerrero: It’s going to be a war against Maidana

By Dan Ambrose: At yesterday’s press conference with former two time former world champion Robert Guerrero (29-1-1, 18 KO’s) and two time World Boxing Association (WBA) light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana (30-2, 27 KO’s) to promoter their August 27th fight at the HP Pavilion, in San Jose, California. Guerrero, 28, said it’s going to be a war between him and the 27-year-old Maidana in Guerrero’s nearby city of San Jose.

Guerrero comes from nearby Gilroy and will have the crowd on his side for this fight. However, Guerrero is going to need to bring a lot of toughness and power if he wants to beat Maidana and make a case for himself that he deserves to be matched against fighters like Amir Khan and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

If Guerrero can win and look good, he’ll likely get a fight against Khan because they both share the same promoter and it will be an easy fight to put together. However, Guerrero is moving up in weight from the lightweight division and there’s a question mark about whether Guerrero possesses the needed power to get respect from Maidana. Guerrero has moved up three divisions in the past two years and he’s no longer knocking anyone out.

At featherweight, Guerrero was taking out most of his opposition but that’s all changes since he moved up to lightweight. He’s fought twice and not come close to knocking out anyone. Now, Guerrero is moving up again, this time to light welterweight and is facing one of the hardest punchers in the division in Maidana, who likes to slug on the inside the way that Guerrero does. For Guerrero to win, he’s going to have to use movement to try and keep enough distance between him and Maidana that he doesn’t take a beating.

If you stand in front of Maidana and let him hit you for 12 rounds, it doesn’t matter who you are, he’s got a great chance of knocking you out. And if Guerrero gets cut like he did in his fight against Daud Cino Yordan, we could see Guerrero panic and mentally crumble. If you want the key to beating Guerrero, look at what Yordan was in the process of doing to Guerrero early in their fight.

Yordan took the fight to the inside and was hitting Guerrero hard and roughing him up and Guerrero looked out of his league in the fight before it was stopped. The same goes for Guerrero’s fight against Orlando Salido, who took the fight to Guerrero and roughed him up and came out on top. The fight results were overturned due to Salido testing positive for a banned substance, but he still showed how to beat Guerrero.
