Fury-Chisora: Tyson has the size but does he have the punch to win?

By Sean McDaniel: Undefeated Tyson Fury (14-0, 10 KO’s) stands 6’9” and weighs 250+ pounds and is one of the biggest heavyweights in the division. He’s got size but his power is lacking in a major way. On July 23rd, Fury, 23, is going to have to find enough power to defeat British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion Dereck Chisora (14-0, 9 KO’) in their fight at the Wembley Arena in Wembley, England.

Fury definitely has the size advantage in this fight but it’s unclear whether he’ll have enough power and ring smarts to win this fight. Fury has a lot to learn in the boxing game and he’s fighting someone good enough to cause him some serious problems unless he fights smart.

Fury probably isn’t going to be able to mow the tough Chisora down with his slapping shots. Fury does well against weaker B and C level fighters that he can overwhelm on size alone. But in order to beat Chisora, Fury is going to have to show some technique, a good fight strategy and some badly needed stamina.

Fury fades by the 6th round in most of his fights and tends to go to degrade at that point and resort to slapping. Chisora stays composed in the later rounds of his fights and keeps firing hard head and body shots. Chisora isn’t the biggest puncher that you’ll ever see but he hits hard enough to cause problems and he throws a lot of shots.

It doesn’t matter that he’s not knocking you out with one big punches, his work rate alone makes it easier for him. Fury’s got a good trainer in Emanuel Steward but unless he’s able to absorb the kinds of things that Steward is trying to teach him than it’s all a big waste.
