Image: Dzinziruk vs. Konecny on September 30By Eric Thomas: World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior middleweight champion Serhiy Dzinziruk (37-1, 23 KO’s) will be making a defense of his title against number #1 contender Lukas Konecny (47-3, 22 KO’s) on September 30th in Czechoslovakia.

Dzinziruk, 35, hasn’t fought since losing by a 8th round TKO to Sergio Martinez last March. Dzinziruk gave it a good try but wasn’t powerful enough to compete with the hard hitting Martinez and ended up getting blasted out in the 8th.

Konecny, 33, fought Dzinziruk three years ago, losing by a 12 round majority decision in a fight that took place in Germany. The fight looked more like a draw than a win for Dzinziruk, and it’s too bad that Konecny had to wait three long years to get another shot at the WBO title.

Konecny has won his last 11 fights, beating mostly fringe and second tier opposition. He did beat Hussein Bayram and Matthew Hall, two decent fighters during that time, but most of the other guys have been 2nd tier opposition.

Dzinziruk has the jab, the movement and the power to win this fight if he lets his hands go. He can’t fight as conservatively as he did against Martinez if he wants to win. Dzinziruk didn’t throw enough punches in the Martinez fight and didn’t even jab enough. Dzinziruk will lose if he can’t at least keep a steady jab on Konecny during the fight. He can’t be stingy with his jab, which his best weapon, and expect to beat a short pressure fighter like Konecny. Dzinziruk needs to jab and move to win.
