By Sean McDaniel: British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion Dereck Chisora (14-0, 9 KO’s) faces the talk 6’9″ Tyson Fury (14-0, 10 KO’s) in what Chisora hopes to be a rather routine title defense on July 23 at the Wembley Arena, Wembley, London, England. Although Fury has gotten a lot of press with his mouth, his size and some of his wins, Chisora figures to beat him easily and then go after a fight against IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko later in the year.

Chisora, 27, came close to fighting Wladimir on two occasions but both bouts were cancelled after Wladimir injured an abdominal muscle. Chisora is a good fighter, but not someone that would trouble Wladimir any. Chisora reminds one of a weaker, fatter version of Samuel Peter. Chisora wouldn’t have the tools to beat a super star heavyweight like Wladimir. However, Chisora does have the needed ingredients to beat a limited heavyweight like Fury as long as Chisora can get inside Fury’s long reach and work him over to the head and body.

Perhaps Chisora’s biggest asset for his fight against Fury is his stamina. Unlike Fury, Chisora doesn’t wear down after six rounds and fight sloppy. Fury is pretty much a four to six round fighter. After he reaches that point in the fight, Fury tends to get sloppy to the point where he’s slapping. Fury still wins but that’s only because he’s been facing truly awful opposition. His trainer Emanuel Steward sees great things from Fury in the future. However, Steward’s excitement about Fury hasn’t resulted in Fury looking any better.

David Haye wants Wladimir to fight him in a rematch before October. Chisora could be the one that takes that fight away from Haye by being the one to fight Wladimir next. The chances are slim that Wladimir will agree to fight Haye again so soon anyway, but Chisora is going to make sure that he’s the next one to face Wladimir by making an example of Fury. An impressive win for Chisora will make it a much easier decision for Wladimir to make in choosing him rather than the recently disgraced Haye.
