Chisora targeting Price and McDermott for his next two fights and then a world title shot

By William Mackay: It seems that British and Commonwealth champion Dereck Chisora (14-0, 9 KO’s) is no longer so eager to take on IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko in his next fight. Chisora has been chomping at the bit to fight Wladimir for a while now and came close to fighting him on two separate occasions recently but saw the fights go up in smoke when Wladimir was unable to make it through training camp due to an annoying abdominal injury.

Now, however, Chisora says he wants to fight heavyweight David Price and then John McDermott before fighting for a world title. It doesn’t make sense. Chisora sees these fights as a path to Klitschko despite the fact that Klitschko already said that he’s interested in possibly facing Chisora if he can get by Tyson Fury next week in their fight on July 23. Would Chisora turn his back on a big payday against Klitschko to take risky fights against Price and McDermott?

I think it would incredibly stupid for Chisora to make this move, because he’s not that good of a fighter that he can defeat guys like that with a high degree of certainty. I think he can get by McDermott, but Price might be a whole different matter altogether. If Chisora loses to Price, then he can pretty much forget fighting Klitschko in the foreseeable future.

Chisora said this to the dailystar.co.uk: “I am the No. 1 in Britain and I want to be at the top for another five years and nobody is going to push me off this throne. I can’t wait to get in there with Tyson. It will be a good fight. Once I get through with him, then I want to meet the likes of David Price and John McDermott before I go on to the world title.”

Fury also could trip Chisora up with his huge size and his smothering attacks. If Fury’s stamina holds up, he could bludgeon Chisora into submission. That would be a huge loss for Chisora and it would be difficult seeing him getting a shot at one of the world champions for ages after a loss like that. This is a make or break fight for Chisora. If he loses it, he forget about Klitschko. He could still get a fight with Price and McDermott, but those wouldn’t be smart fights for Chisora to take coming off a loss to Fury. He’s going to be in the rebuilding stage if he gets beaten by Fury, and the last thing he needs is another loss to someone like Price. That would really be a huge setback for Chisora’s career.
