Ariza: Pacquiao eats seven times a day

Juan Manuel Marquez Manny Pacquiao Pacquiao vs. Marquez Pacquiao-MarquezBy Chris Williams: In a sign that World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38 KO’s) is fighting in the wrong division, his strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza is saying that Pacquiao needs to eat an incredible seven times a day just to maintain enough weight to fight at welterweight.

It sounds silly, because Pacquiao looks to be slowing down in the past two years and you have to look at the effort required to stay at welterweight as the cause of Pacquiao slowing down. He’s facing his old nemesis Juan Manuel Marquez (53-5-1, 39 KO’s), a lightweight in his next fight on November 12th.

Instead of taking the opportunity to fight at a lower weight and not have to worry about eating 24/7 just to maintain the weight, Pacquiao will still be facing Marquez at welterweight. I think it’s stupid, but if that’s what Pacquiao wants to do, it’s on him. I think he’s shortening his career by eating so much and fighting so far over his old weight class. Pacquiao used to fight at featherweight and has moved up in weight four weight classes to get to welterweight.

There’s only Floyd Mayweather Jr left for Pacquiao to fight, and that fight probably won’t happen because of the differences between the two fighters in the blood testing for performance enhancing drugs. Pacquiao won’t fight Amir Khan, and other than those two, there’s really no point in Pacquiao staying at welterweight and eating so much. Unless Pacquiao wants to agree to the blood testing organization that Mayweather is requesting, he needs to move down in weight two or three divisions and try to extend his career.
