By Dan Ambrose: WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez (37-0-1, 27 KO’s) defends his title against challenger Alfonso Gomez (23-4, 12 KO’s) on September 17th in a fight that will be taking place during the Mexican Independence Day weekend, and the venue for the fight will be at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.
Gomez is a bit out of his league in this fight, as he’s not a true junior middleweight and doesn’t have the heavy hands that the 21-year-old Alvarez possesses. He also doesn’t have the same kind of boxing skills that the young Alvarez has going for him.
Gomez still prefers to slug with his opponents and does well when matched against B and C level fighters. Gomez’s problems occur when he faces quality guys like Miguel Cotto, who wiped Gomez out in the past. Gomez has rebounded from the loss to Cotto and has won his last five bouts, but that winning streak is likely to end against the hard hitting Alvarez on September 17th.
Alvarez says “I’ve fought and beaten much better competition and I’m going to win the world title.”
Gomez sounds a little out of touch with reality with that over the top quote To be fair, he did beat Arturo Gatti in the past, but this was Gatti at the end of his career when he had little left. Gomez’s other good wins have come against Jose Luis Castillo and Jesus Soto Karass.
However, the Castillo fight has to be taken with a grain of salt because Castillo isn’t the fight that he used to be and is fighting way above his old weight class. Gomez basically beat a heavy and faded Castillo, but that’s not the same thing as beating him in his prime at his own weight class.
