Adamek vs. Klitschko: Vitali will likely have to chase Tomasz down to get the KO

By Dan Ambrose: It’s interesting to hear boxing fans of Tomasz Admaek (44-1, 28 KO’s) say that he won’t fight like WBA heavyweight champion David Haye did in disgracing himself in a one-sided 12 round decision loss to IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko last week.

However, I see that as roughly the same outcome as Adamek’s September 10th fight against WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (42-2, 39 Ko’s) at the Stadion Miejski, in Wroclaw, Poland. We’ve already seen what Adamek is all about in his past fights at heavyweight, where he’s been shown to be a runner, and against a quality heavyweight like Vitali, you can’t expect Adamek to be anymore than what he’s been in the past.

He’s shown what type of heavyweight he is in running performances against weak heavyweights like Kevin McBride, Vinny Maddalone, Jason Estrada, Andrew Golota, Michael Grant and Chris Arreola. Against Vitali, who is a lot better than those guys, Adamek will be running and forcing Vitali to chase him around the ring. I don’t expect Vitali to do much chasing.

He might try cutting off the ring but Adamek is going to have the pressure of the crowd on his back and with the fight being at home in his native Poland, they’re going to be climbing all over him if Adamek decides to run all night long. But he really doesn’t have much choice. At 6’2″ 215 pounds, Adamek will be giving away five inches in height, five inches in reach, 35 pounds in weight and a great deal in the power department.

It’s hard to believe this but Adamek used to be a big puncher at light heavyweight and cruiserweight. But in moving up to the heavyweight division, Adamek’s power isn’t bothering his opponents much. He needs to land a lot of shots in order to score knockouts, and unfortunately he won’t be able to stand in front of Vitali all night long to try and chip away at him to score a knockout.

Vitali hits too hard and Adamek’s chin is too brittle. He’ll get knocked out if he tries to trade. So you can expect a lot of running from Adamek on September 10th and a game plan that will be identical to Haye’s. Adamek will likely take a great deal of criticism for running and not going out on his shield but he’ll get a good payday like Haye and will live to fight another day.
