McKenna (McJack): The rumors that have been circulating since Victor Ortiz’s AKA “Vicious” (29-2-2, 22 KO’s) dominant victory over Andre Berto in April are rumors no more. Otiz will be fighting Floyd Mayweather AKA “Money” (41-0, 25 KO’s) on September 17 it was confirmed today.

Things can change very quickly in boxing. Two years ago Victor Otiz was held in disgrace by the boxing world when he quit against power punching Marcos Maidana from Argentina. Now since defeating Andre Berto in April, Ortiz holds the WBC title and will earn millions in the September fight against Mayweather.

Ortiz’s manager Roland Arellano stated that he thinks Mayweather is demonstrating great courage in taking on one of the most threatening fighters at 147 lbs.

Arellano was ecstatic when asked to comment on the latest developments concerning his fighter. Arellano was contacted in Garden City, Kansas where Ortiz was being honored for his sensational victory over Berto. He was quoted as saying “We are honored to have an opportunity to fight such a great champion.

Arellano said that he always knew that Victor Ortiz would rise to the top and that in Ortiz he had a crown jewel in the making. He said it came to the point where Victor decided on his own that he had to show people who he was and that he did that against Andre Berto.

Arellano would not discuss the terms of the fight but he said they were happy to give up the lions’ share of the money to Mayweather in order to make the fight happen. Arellano said he did not care whose gloves they wore, whose name was on the promotional material and who enters the ring first. The Oritz camp just wants the opportunity to showcase his talent to the world. Arellano said “We understand that Floyd Mayweather is making all the money. We just wanted the opportunity to take over the pound for pound kingdom. We have that opportunity.”

When asked what would happen if Oritz won the fight, Arellano said “We have built a platform for Ortiz to become champion. Now we want to build a platform for him to become a brand and carry that on for a long time. Mayweather is 34, Oscar is gone. Hopkins is incredible but he can’t last forever.”

Arellano feels that Victor Ortiz can be the next Oscar De Lahoya in terms of generating revenue and that his positive image will help boxing. Arellano also noted that Ortiz has picked up enormous support since he turned things around after his defeat at the hands of Marcos Maidans.

It appears that Ortiz’s fight with Maidana was the turning point in his career. He was a different fighter in his match with Andre Berto.
