Montiel stops Cermeno

By Dan Ambrose: Making his first appearance since being stopped in the 2nd round last February by Nonito Donaire, former three division world champion Fernando Montiel (45-3-2, 35 KO’s) stopped the 31-year-old former interim WBA World bantamweight champion Nehomar Cermeno (20-4, 12 KO’s) in the 3rd round on Saturday night at the Estadio Banorte, Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico.

Montiel, 31, badly hurt the Venezuelan Cermeno with a hard left hook to the midsection as Cermeno was charging him in the last seconds of the 2nd round. Cermeno, badly hurt from the shot, attempted to clinch and wrestle his way out of the round. However, Montiel was able to get enough room to add several more short body punches to cause Cermeno to take a knee shortly before the round ended. At the start of the 3rd round, Cermeno failed to come out of his corner to continue fighting.

Like a lot of Montiel’s fights, the action was pretty even in the first couple of rounds as Montiel took a few left-right combinations and jabs from Cermeno. However, you could see that the big punching Montiel was trying to set Cermeno up for one of his big shots. Montiel landed some nice left hands in both the 1st and 2nd rounds that seemed to get Cermeno’s attention.

With this loss, Cermeno has now been beaten in four out of his last five fights since 2010. Cermeno’s career has gone downhill since beating Cristian Mijares twice in 2009, as well as Alejandro Valdez. Cermeno was beaten twice by WBA World bantamweight champion Anselmo Moreno in 2010 and this year he was beaten by Victor Terrazas recently by a 12 round split decision. Before the loss, Cermeno was ranked #6 by the World Boxing Association in the super bantamweight division.
