Image: McCloskey interested in fighting Maidana nextBy William Mackay: Light welterweight fringe contender Paul McCloskey (22-1, 12 KO’s) must be a glutton for punishment because he is coming off of a 6th round technical decision loss to WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan in April and now McCloskey has set his sights for WBA light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana (30-1, 27 KO’s) to fight next if McCloskey can land the fight. McCloskey took the question straight to Maidana himself by contacting him on his twitter account rather than waiting around for his management to try and set up the fight.

McCloskey said this on this twitter: “A fight with me here [in Ireland] will fill any arena. Let’s give the fans what they want. let’s do it! Can you follow me back so we can get an e-mail address or phone contact for your team.”

Maidana responded with “Could be a good fight indeed. Let’s do it in UK.”

Wow! This would be a great fight if they can put it together. I do believe McCloskey is right about it selling out an arena in Ireland. But it would he hard to see McCloskey winning the fight. Maidana puts a lot of pressure on and he’d get in close to where he wouldn’t miss. On the outside, of course, McCloskey would be a big problem because of his movement, but once Maidana gets near McCloskey, the Irish fighter would be a sitting duck and wouldn’t last long at all. I couldn’t see him being able to take more than five or six rounds at the most of Maidana tagging him with big shots.
