Image: Mayweather: Ortiz will be my 42nd victim on September 17thBy Chris Williams: After a year away from boxing unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. (41-0, 25 KO’s) is ready to get back in the ring and continue with his domination of the sport when he meets up with WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KO’s) on September 17th in a big money fight for Mayweather. This fight may turn out to be a tune-up bout for Mayweather, as there is a lot of speculation that he could wind up facing Manny Pacquiao next year in a huge money bout if Mayweather can get by Ortiz and perhaps one more opponent before meeting up with Pacquiao.

It will also require Pacquiao do do his part in beating the 38-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez in their fight in November. Mayweather would seem to have the much tougher task ahead of him because Ortiz is a lot younger than Marquez, hits a lot harder and is roughly the same size as Mayweather. This isn’t a case of Mayweather facing a smaller guy at a catchweight.

In an article by Dan Rafael at ESPN, Mayweather said “On September 17th, Ortiz is just going to be another casualty, the 42nd one who tried and failed. Trust me, I will be ready.”

If Mayweather looks and fights anything like he did a year ago in an impressive 12 round decision victory over Shane Mosley, this is going to be a one-sided fight with Mayweather schooling Ortiz for 12 rounds. The scary part is that Mayweather will probably make it look so easy to the point where fans will be speechless at how good he is. However, Ortiz is a quality fighter and good enough to give Pacquiao tremendous problems if he were ever to fight him. With his power, I can see Ortiz punishing Pacquiao badly, much worse than Antonio Margarito did. But Mayweather will make it look easy because he’s so hard to hit and so precise with his punches.
