The fights we were all craving just weren’t happening. And our luck couldn’t have got any worse when Juan Manuel Lopez-Yuriokis Gamboa showdown for the summer came crashing down when Orlando Salido stopped the unbeaten Puerto Rican. But now at last things are looking brighter.

Every time Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather Jr’s name is brought up we all suddenly pay attention. And I’m sure by now he’s got the record for most comebacks and this one is much better than the Juan Manuel Marquez and Shane Mosley comebacks.

He’ll be fighting the kid who was set perfectly for glory. Yes, they even called him the next Golden Boy. He had the looks, the charisma and the fan friendly fighting style. But unlike Oscar he didn’t really have the brightest bunch of promoters. Had he beaten the hard hitting Marcos Maidana it would have sent out a great statement. And for the first two rounds it was going great except the one knockdown he suffered, but it looked as if he was ready to take out the Argentinean. Then it all went wrong and Ortiz was exposed badly. Since he’s had a steady but unconvincing return and even drew with Lamont Peterson despite it being a disputed verdict. But out of nowhere he jumped up to Welterweight where he looked much bigger and outgunned unbeaten WBC champion Andre Berto in a shock decision. On the back of that emphatic win this fight with Mayweather may well have been timed perfectly.

Mayweather has been inactive for over a year now but is always in shape to fight and has a natural physique of a Hollywood star. He’ll be the heavy favourite but even he’ll know that this is no easy fight. Ortiz looks a new fighter at Welterweight but you feel a top fighter like Floyd could well bring him to the reality that he doesn’t belong in his league.

Being dropped against Berto was the only bad sign he gave off as Andre is not known for being a big puncher. Mayweather always steps his game up when he needs to and we can only hope that Victor brings out the best in him. At this moment in time i would prefer to not make any predictions but i must admit for Ortiz to win is a big ask and maybe just a bit too big.
