Mayweather and Pacquiao: A trilogy awaits

Image: Mayweather and Pacquiao: A trilogy awaitsBy Lee Courtney: I’m sure I speak for all boxing fans when I say it is great news that Floyd Mayweather Jnr has decided to re-enter the ring. He undoubtedly creates a buzz of excitement when he announces a fight and he certainly knows how to sell it. Victor Ortiz, is a credible opponent, young, fast, southpaw and a belt holder, a perfect tune-up fight after so long out of the ring, for the showdown with Manny Pacquiao.

There will be only 1 winner in September and it won’t be Ortiz. Yes he performed admirably against Andre Berto but taking a belt from Berto and taking the “0” from Mayweather’s record could not be further apart. I have read, with great surprise, how people expect Ortiz to be bigger and stronger than Mayweather but for me, speed, accuracy and a defensive style rarely seen before, wins this fight. Throw in the Marcos Maidana performance and again, I suggest there is only 1 winner.

Pacquiao’s fight against Marquez is equally lopsided. Marquez is a warrior who had to take this fight due to 2 perceived bad decisions against him but time has moved on and Pacquiao has become one of the fastest, strongest and most accurate punchers that I have ever seen and is fighting at a weight which gives him even more superiority.

So the road is clear for these 2 to finally meet in 2012 and hopefully embark upon what could become the greatest trilogy in boxing history, generating sums of money unthinkable just a few years ago. There will be a re-match clause inserted in the contracts, of that there is no doubt and should it be 1 apiece after 2 fights, can you imagine the interest in the rubber match? And it is here, with these potential numbers, that the blood testing, purse split and ring entrance position problems will be ironed out, as I feel that the $100m quotes could prove to be conservative. When all is said and done, it is the money that matters, not the principles.

Ever since Ricky Hatton fought both these guys, I have said there is only 1 credible opponent who could beat the other and watching them fight the Juan Manuel Marquez, Shane Mosley and Joshua Clottey’s of the world has done nothing to change my mind. It is perhaps too much to say they need each other to seal their legacy but at the very least we need this to prevent 100 years of debate and conjecture as to who would have won.

They are both true champions, both with skills that have set them apart from even the exceptional boxers of their era. I like a bet. I won’t be having one on this fight (not the first one at least).
