Image: Martirosyan: I'd KO Saul Alvarez; I don't think he deserves to be championBy Dan Ambrose: Unbeaten number #1 ranked World Boxing Council (WBC) junior middleweight contender Vanes Martirosyan (30-0, 19 Ko’s) thinks he would knock out WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez (36-0-1, 26 KO’s) if he had the opportunity to fight him, and doesn’t feel that the 20-year-old Alvarez deserves to be the WBC world champion at junior middleweight.

The 25-year-old Martirosyan can’t really talk much because he looked absolutely dreadful recently in beating Saul Roman by a 7th round TKO on June 4th, in a fight that Martirosyan was knocked on his backside in the 1st and took a lot of right hands all throughout the fight. Martirosyan had big problems with Roman’s power and had to box in order to get the win.

Speaking with eastsideboxing.com, Martirosyan said “I honestly don’t think Saul Alvarez deserves to be a world champion…I think we’ll KO him. Freddie [Roach] says I’ll knock him out in one round.”

In fairness to Alvarez, Roach often makes outrageous knockout predictions for his fighters and it seems he does this more for the press than in anything else. It’s hard to imagine that Roach really believes that Martirosyan can stop Alvarez in one round, although I do believe Roach sees Martirosyan capable of stopping Alvarez. I don’t see it, though. Alvarez is too strong for Martirosyan and he throws shots with incredible power from all kinds of angles. Alvarez is able to punch with massive power even when backing up. He just is naturally very, very strong.

Alvarez isn’t a one punch knockout guy but he has a big power and is able to punch very hard with every shot. He doesn’t have to load up like other fighters do. That’s what makes Alvarez so hard to beat, because he wears his opponents down with his power. He’s like a junior middleweight version of George Foreman. I can see Martirosyan having a lot of problems with him.
