By John F. McKenna (McJack): Floyd Mayweather (41-0, 25 KO’s) has generated much interest with the announcement that he will be facing Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KO’s) on Sept 17. Floyd’s fans treated the announcement that he was coming out of his self imposed semi exile with great enthusiasm. Mayweather for his part made the case that he was doing this for the benefit of his legions of fans by saying “They have waited too long!”

Mayweather has been inactive since he won a unanimous decision over Shane Mosley in May of 2010. By the time “Money’s” fight against Victor Ortiz comes off in September the length of his inactivity will have been sixteen months. “Vicious” as Ortiz is also known had a rejuvenation in his career when he defeated the favored Andre Berto this past April. He surprised many fans who thought that he did not have the heart to win against a major contender after he quit against the power punching Marcos Maidana in 2009. Ortiz showed great courage in the Berto fight by climbing off the canvas twice to win the fight. As impressive as that fight was, it was one fight. A career turnaround needs to be more than one fight. Obviously “Vicious” will be motivated when he fights Mayweather. Whether you like Floyd or not he is an extraordinary fighter and Ortiz will need a little luck to beat him. As good as Victory Ortiz is he is not on the same level as Manny Pacquiao.

There are questions that need to be answered at the news of the impending Mayweather – Ortiz fight. Will this fight be a tune up fight for an eventual bout with Manny Pacquiao in 2012? Will Floyd go back into semi retirement after he presumably easily defeats Ortiz?

Did Floyd take this fight solely for financial reasons due to the mounting debt incurred from his various legal problems? Will Mayweather continue to avoid a fight with Pacquiao, sticking to his story that he wants to clean up boxing because of rampant PEDS abuse?

Of course Mayweather will insist that both fighters be drug tested as per Floyd’s stipulation and Ortiz who stands to make millions off of this fight will go along.

At the end of the day the biggest question that needs to be asked of Floyd “Money” Mayweather is, if your going to fight Victor Ortiz, why would you not fight Manny Pacquiao and make millions more, in addition to securing your legacy?
