Image: Haye shows southpaw stance at today's open workout, and then quickly leavesBy Sean McDaniel: Photo: Stefan Hoyer – In yet another bizarre act by WBA heavyweight champion David Haye, he came out for today’s media day work out in Hamburg practicing a southpaw stance with his trainer Adam Booth, but then quickly departed after throwing only a few punches after warming up. It was very, very odd to say the least. At first I thought Haye had injured himself but then realized it was more of Haye’s games to try and throw Wladimir off before Saturday.

The southpaw stance that Haye showed seemed to be designed to make Wladimir think hard that Haye may reveal that in their fight on Saturday. That would be a really risky thing for Haye to do, because he hasn’t switched from orthodox to southpaw in his previous fights and it takes a long time for fighters to get good enough fighting this way to be successful at it.

To be sure, Wladimir had problems with the big southpaw Corrie Sanders in 2003 and was knocked out by him. However, Sanders was a legitimate southpaw and had fought from that stance his entire career. Sanders knew what he was doing wasn’t trying out anything new with Wladimir. If Haye fights like that on Saturday, he could be wide open for Wladimir’s right hand. Haye doesn’t have a great left, and it would be a risky tactic for him. Sanders had a great left hand and was able to hit Wladimir again and again with it en route to knocking him down three times and stopping him in the 3rd. Haye would be effectively shooting blanks with his left hand in comparison to Sanders.

If this was another one of Haye’s schemes to throw Wladimir off, it would seem to be one of his weaker ones because Wladimir wasn’t concerned in the least after this latest episode from Haye, saying “I can’t even take it seriously. It’s not even funny anymore. Reality is coming, it’s a serious business. It won’t be funny for David Haye. I think he sits in his hotel room and thins, ‘what else can I do,’ to anger the Klitschko team? But little by little we are coming to the reality, and reality’s name is July 2nd.”

Wladimir is right. I think Haye and Booth are working overtime trying to throw Wladimir off so that Haye has the mental edge on Saturday. If this was just a publicity stunt I could understand it, but quickly leaving a media day workout after throwing a few punches is cheating Haye in terms of publicity.
