Image: Fury vs. Chisora: Tyson has to keep the fight on the outside to winBy Sean McDaniel Unbeaten heavyweight Tyson Fury (14-0, 10 KO’s) has always been able to walk down his overmatched and smaller opponents to batter them at close range to score knockout wins. For the most part, Fury has been able to get away with this despite having very mediocre boxing. Fury has done it on size along mostly. On July 23, Fury is being put in with a very good fighter in British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion Dereck Chisora (14-0, 9 KO’s) in a fight at the Wembley Arena, Wembley, London, England.

Chisora, 27, is older, stronger and a much better overall fighter than Fury is. This isn’t someone that Fury can walk down and take out with a body attack or a sloppy looking bludgeoning onslaught. Fury has got to have excellent form and must keep the fight on the outside for him to have any real chance of winning.

Fury now has one of the best trainers in the world in Emanuel Steward, who currently also trains IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko and who also trained former heavyweight champ Lennox Lewis in the past. It can’t get any better for Fury. However, he’s got to learn the things that Steward is teaching him about using his height and reach and keeping the action the outside. If Fury fails to heed Steward’s advice for the Chisora fight then Fury is going to take a battering and end up getting knocked out quick.

Chisora is a classic pressure fighter that never stops coming forward. The only way to halt Chisora’s progress is to jab, move or blast away at him. Fury doesn’t have the power to match Chisora punch for punch nor does he have a good enough jab to keep the action on the outside. It’s Steward’s job to try and teach Fury how to fight tall and keep the action on the outside before he faces Chisora. If Fury makes the mistake of fighting Chisora the way he did John McDermott, then Fury is going to get knocked out quick. He’s too flawed and too limited at close range to beat a fierce puncher like Chisora.
